Social Inequality Is An Important Issue In Today’S Society.

Social inequality is an important issue in today’s society. Today, people face many inequalities based on their gender, race, religion, and disability status, yet there are many different ideologies and ongoing debate about social inequality. There are three perspectives concerning the issue of inequality in America. This paper will analyze an article about social inequality, â€Å"Gender, Race, and Income Gaps† by Richard Hogan and Carolyn Perrucci, and how it applies to the viewpoints concerning social inequality. In order to better understand the debate surrounding social inequality, one must first understand the three viewpoints. The first viewpoint is one of liberals and many democrats, while the second is that of Republicans and†¦show more content†¦Their proof of this â€Å"post-racial society† is Barrack Obama’s presidency. They say that if there were still racial discrimination, the U.S. would not have had an African American President for eight years. Lastly, these individuals believe that government programs work, but there is no longer a need for them because of the increased opportunity in our society. Therefore we should eliminate government programs. The other position that some Conservatives and Religious groups may support is that there is nothing wrong with society and it is your individual choices; this position is focused on existentialism. The position negates social inequality completely and asserts that your success in our society is solely up to you and your individual decisions, there are no prejudices in society that hold you back and everyone has the same amount of opportunity. In this, Conservatives and Religious groups may point to violations of social norms such as drugs and having children out of wedlock as individual choices that may cause you to be less successful in life. Vastly different from the two viewpoints that Conservatives prescribe to, Liberals believe that inequality is increasing in America. In many ways they take a very economic standpoint, stating that 1% of the nation owns and control 62% of the wealth of the country and the top 5% own and control 90 to 95% of the wealth in the country.
